From marc at cs.uu.nl Wed Apr 13 17:33:39 2005 From: marc at cs.uu.nl (Marc van Kreveld) Date: Mon Jan 9 13:41:18 2006 Subject: Two PhD positions in Computational Geometry at Utrecht University Message-ID: <425D2DC3.4030908@cs.uu.nl> At the Institute of Information and Computing Sciences of Utrecht University, there are openings for two PhD students in computational geometry on a project entitled GOGO: Geometric Optimization with Geometric Constraints funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The research will be supervised by dr. Marc van Kreveld and dr. Rene van Oostrum, and will be done at the Center for Geometry, Imaging and Virtual Environments (GIVE), headed by prof.dr. Mark Overmars. See http://www.give.nl/ Summary ------- Geometric computation for cartography, realistic terrain modeling, and delineation of imprecise geographic regions all require geometric algorithms where several geometric criteria must be met simultaneously. This proposal addresses such computational problems by designing new algorithms with efficiency analyses and approximation factor proofs. In cartographic generalization, for example, spatial aggregation of two regions asks for a new, connected region that has a natural shape, but while adding as little area in the connection as possible. For metro maps, stations must be close to their true location, connections may only have few, restricted-orientation links, and connections may not intersect. Many other examples can be given in which there are several criteria that determine a good solution. In terrain modeling, conversion of an elevation grid to a polyhedral terrain (triangulation) is an important operation. The resulting triangulation is often the Delaunay triangulation because it maximizes the smallest angle used. Therefore, it is good for height interpolation. But other criteria like slope fidelity and avoiding artificial dams are also important. These problems will be studied using higher-order Delaunay triangulations. Geometric optimization problems are often NP-hard, or an optimal solution is incomputable. Allowing additional constraints will not reduce asymptotic running time. Instead, problems will become essentially more difficult. Therefore, the focus will be on efficient approximation algorithms with guaranteed performance factors. The starting point is problems with two geometric constraints where one constraint must be met using a threshold, while the other constraint is optimized. The goal is to obtain an understanding to what extent problems with several geometric criteria can be solved or approximated efficiently. We offer -------- - A position as a PhD student for four years. In the Netherlands, PhD students are not considered students but research staff. Hence, they get a (competitive) salary rather than a scholarship. - An interesting, internationally oriented working environment that specializes in computational geometry and its applications. - The possibility to follow courses and attend international summerschools and conferences. We look for computer scientists with a Master's degree and ---------------------------------------------------------- - Interest in and good knowledge of algorithms, preferably geometric algorithms - Affinity with mathematics - Interest in applications to the spatial sciences More information ---------------- Interested candidates can contact dr. (The 2003 conference was cancelled because of SARS.) It is being sponsored by ISPRS Inter-Commission Working Group II/IV, "Dynamic and Multi-dimensional Systems and Applications". The workshop itself will be held on September 6-8, 2005, but a free tutorial entitled "Two- and Three-dimensional Topological Methods in GIS" will also be given on September 5. Further detail will be put on the website soon. The workshop series was started because of the perceived need for an emphasis on the future directions of GIS, in particular dynamic GIS and 3D GIS, which were not adequately emphasized elsewhere. It is meant to be an interdisciplinary forum for leading researchers in related areas to present the latest developments and applications, to discuss cutting-edge technology, to exchange research ideas and to promote international collaboration in this field. Key issues include: 1) Current GIS data models and modelling methods are basically designed to handle 2D static spatial objects. It is difficult for them to represent dynamically changing 3D spatial scenarios. 2) The maintenance of topological relations and data access for multi-dimensional data is much more complicated than for 2D data. 3) For multi-dimensional spatial data, new methods need to be developed for data interpolation, analysis, visualization and human-computer interaction. TOPICS OF INTEREST: - Conceptual and logical spatial data models - Multi-scale and multi-media representation - 3D, and 3D+time, spatial data modelling - Digital terrain modelling - Spatio-temporal models - Time in GIS - Visualization - Dynamic data modelling - Spatial analysis - Applications Submissions in other related areas will also be considered. IMPORTANT DATES: Submission of abstract/expression of interest: May 1, 2005 (must be done in order to submit the full paper) Submission of full paper: May 15, 2005 Notification of Acceptance: July 10, 2005 Early Registration: July 20, 2005 Camera-ready version of papers: July 25, 2005 (conference registration required to submit final version) DMGIS'05 Workshop: September 5-8, 2005 PROCEEDINGS: Proceedings will be published in the International Archives of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences of the ISPRS. CONFERENCE FEES: Details of the conference fees and accommodation will be posted on the website soon. SUBMISSION: Authors are invited to submit papers describing original research in the fields previously mentioned. All submitted papers will be referred for quality, originality and relevance by the Scientific Committee. The acceptance or rejection of a paper will be based on the reviews. Papers must be written in English and must be formatted strictly according to the ISPRS guidelines. The maximum length is restricted to 6 pages, including all figures and references. There will be a fee for each extra page. Templates (in MS Word and LaTeX) to prepare a camera-ready version can be found on the website.
